YMN Review: Guess & Check

Entanglement-Cover-Final-500

“Entanglement” Cover

Guess & Check is an indie rock band from New York City. Formed in 2011, the four piece band has released two albums, their debut EP in 2011 and their first full length album earlier this year. Guess & Check is a very talented band that has great musical ability, yet they seem to fly under the radar, which is a shame. Everything from lyrics to instrumentals is solid, which makes for a very satisfying listen that leaves you wanting to put them on repeat, time and time again.

“Entanglement” was released on January 16th, 2014. I should mention that “Entanglement” has an old school groove to it that is done quite well and is a great sound for the band. The first track, “Lucy Relax”, is somewhat of an unexpected surprise and really does the job of setting up the remainder of the album. . In truth, “Lucy Relax” is just the tip of the iceberg and throughout the album, there are many gems to discover. The debut single off the album, “Changeling” is a very well done track and is an excellent choice for a single that should do very well. It has a strong presence and is one of my favourite tracks off the record.

Guess & Check

The title track is a great song stuck in the middle of the record. Being one of the stronger songs, “Entanglement” would be a great option for a second single. The vocals and instrumentals seem to gel really well on this track and give the album a little boost overall. The final song on the album “My God I Just Realized” is a rather upbeat way to end the album. Regardless, it is a pleasant way to end to an album filled with what appears to be quite the mellow vibe. Personally, there isn’t a song that I would skip while listening to the album and that to me is a strong indicator that this album and this band are doing things right.

“Entanglement” is an album filled with several surprising twists that keep you wondering what the band will do next. I can only imagine how great it would be to see Guess & Check live and would highly recommend check in them out if you get the chance. It may be early in the year but I feel that “Entanglement” will be one of the best albums of 2014.

YMN Review: Never Let This Go

Based out of Tempe, Arizona, Never Let This Go has been entertaining audiences since early 2012. Blending alternative rock with pop punk, Never Let This Go appeals to a wide variety of music tastes and makes for quite an interesting listen. Releasing their self titled debut EP in May of 2012, the band set a solid foundation from which to build off of. After listening to the record, there really isn’t a song that stands above the rest. Although, that isn’t to say that it wasn’t a great album, it just seeme1016326_558225144262768_1300632087_nd to lack that “wow” factor. More recently, Never Let This Go released their second EP, “Remember”. You can sense that the band has grown and matured in their sound and they seem more comfortable and confident, which is great to see.

One of the things this young band can be proud of is their amazingly supportive fan base. I was really impressed with, not only the size, but how great of a relationship the band has with there fans. You can tell that they really care about them and vise versa. With all of their accomplishments, it’s hard to believe that this band is a little over two years old! The amount of work that these guys put in is definitely something to respect.

All in all, this band has put out some really solid material and have come a long way in such a short period of time. If you ever get to see Never Let This Go live, I’ve heard they are amazing and it is not an opportunity to pass up. I feel as though this band is just going to keep getting bigger and I wish them nothing but success in their future!

YMN Review: Stereo Off

Stereo Off is an indie rock band with hints of electro, hailing from New York City. It’s the presence of the electronic twist that really sets these guys apart from the pack. It’s easy to overdo the electronic aspects but Stereo Off gets it just right. The result is a very versatile sound that is both easy to groove to and at the same time, rather mellow.

Formed in 2012, Stereo Off started as a one man show and evolved into the five piece band it is today. Being from New York, the band had no lack of places to play at and they have already played at many of the City’s top venues. Earlier this month, Stereo Off released a self titled, five song EP. The first song “Photographs” is a strong track in itself and really, is just a preview of what’s to come. As you listen to the record, it just seems to get better and better, with each song outdoing the last. Perhaps, my favourite song on the album would be “The Thrill”, a killer song that hooks you immediately and demands that you listen the whole way through. There really isn’t much that I don’t care for in regards to the album and I’m sure the band will just continue to move upwards from here.

In addition, they also have several other songs available on their website, which are also incredibly great and are worth looking into. I look forward to hearing what comes next from this exciting new band.

YMN Interview: Savannah Quinn

How did you get your start in music? Was there one thing that really pushed you that way?

I started my music off in choirs. I had the amazing opportunity to travel around the world (Italy, New York) and perform in incredible, famous venues including Carnegie Hall! After a few years of choirs I knew it was time to move on and focus more on performing solo. A few years after being in the choir I started taking vocal lessons from Darcy D. Being with him for two years now, I have discovered what genre I am (Pop Rock) and that I have a huge passion for writing songs as well as performing! I have recently made it into the finals at the PNE Star showdown as well as The Valley Vocal Contest and have been nominated ‘Best Performing Artist’ at the Regional Arty Awards. All of this affirmation keeps me going. I know that music is what I want to be doing with my life and I won’t stop chasing it.

When writing music, where do you draw inspiration from?

While writing music, I draw inspiration from whatever I’m going through or how I’m feeling at that moment. If its a gorgeous sunny day and I’m hanging out on the beach (on of my favorite things to do in the summer) and I’m feeling good, the song that will come out of me is going to be a happy, fun song. If it’s a dreary day and I’m feeling mellow…the song that’s going to come out of me will most likely be a ballad. It’s as simple as that! 🙂

You recently formed a band, care to tell us how that came about?

Yes! I have recently formed a band! It makes me so excited knowing that I have one now! Without the band I would get gigs and it would always be a struggle to find musicians that could find the time to come out and play…it just felt like it was the next step that had to be done. There are five of us in the band Colin (bass), Nick (drums) Rick (lead guitar) Tasha (piano, vocals) Savannah (Lead Vocals and guitar). I have been good friends with Rick and Tasha for a long time and when I told them about the idea of starting a band they were both very excited. I didn’t know of any drummers or bass players so Tasha asked her friend Colin and Rick talked to his friend Nick and well….here we are! It all happened very organically. We all get along very well, it’s just amazing being in a room full of such talented musicians and all of the creative juices flowing! I love it!

What is your favourite thing about performing live?

First of all I’d just like to mention how much I LOVE live performing. The one thing I like most about it though has to be feeding off of the audiences energy. I love looking out in the crowd watching them have a good time and when I see that I love to give that feeling back in return because I’m always having a good time on stage! You know when you go to a concert and you can tell that the artist is really into the emotion of the song…that’s what I try and focus very hard on doing. I believe that if you feel the song and create a moment for your audience, it is that much easier to capture their attention and make that experience that much more memorable.

Who are some of your musical inspirations?

Lately I have been heavily influenced by Grace Potter. She is a Rock singer that has such a wicked voice and so much energy and presence on stage, I really look up to her. If you look up her song ‘The Lion The Beast The beat’, you’ll know what I’m talking about. Throughout my life though, I have been very much influenced by the Beatles and Queen. I grew up on classics like them and I still love and listen to them.

Finally, where do you see yourself, musically, in the next year?

This year, with my new band we are going to be getting as many gigs as possible, working on our performance and honing our original music. Later on in the year we are looking forward to possibly doing a small tour as well as getting some professional recordings done. Mostly though we want to be getting out name out there and performing wherever and whenever we can
