YMN Interview: Daniel and the Bear Skull

How did the band name come about?

Well its a long story, me (Jared), Josh and Tanner are roommates and we have a wolf rug that we named Daniel and quite literally a bear skull. So before we even had a band we always thought of a band name and we decided on Daniel and the Bear Skull and when we actually decided to make a band we stuck true to what we said we would do.

What is your favourite song you have written and why?

Our favourite song is What Doesn’t Bleed. We like the song because of it’s positive message about how no matter what the situation is, you can’t destroy Gods love and forgiveness.

While writing, where do you draw inspiration from?

I’d say quite often its about a girl and also we try to draw inspiration from our Christian roots.

Are there any bands that you tend to model your sound after?

The Ramones haha but on a serious note, I’d say we model our sound on the newer folk style bands like Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Old Crow Medicine Show and Mumford & Sons.

What is your favourite thing about performing live?

I’d say the excitement of getting to do my passion in front of others. For josh and Tanner probably the free food and drinks. If Josh could I’m sure he would love to always get paid in pizza.

Finally, any plans to release some new music in the near future?

Well we recently won a grant for a music video so you can expect that and also expect to see a possible single or LP in the near future.

YMN Interview: New Cathedral

1) It’s been almost two years since we last talked with you. What have you guys been up to?
I can’t believe it’s been two years already! It seems like just yesterday we were all huddled around the computer answering the first round of interview questions you sent us.
The past two years have been pretty big for us. In February 2013 we put out a single called “No Saints or Angels” and we spent a lot of time trying to get exposure by playing gigs with some bigger bands like The Dangerous Summer and From Indian Lakes. We’ve made a lot of friends within our local scene and have had a lot of fun… but the most important thing we did was get back into the studio.

2) You have a new album out March 6th. Care to tell us a little about it?
The new record, titled Ghost, is going to be out physically on March 6th 2014. We’re going to have a makeshift album release party on the 6th because we’re playing Tampa’s The Orpheum with He Is Legend that night.
The record was recorded and mixed by Dan Byers of Rock Garden Recording in St. Petersburg Florida and mastered by Jim Morris of Morrisound Studios in Tampa. We’re very happy with the way it came out and we’re definitely planning on working with those guys in the future.
Right now the first single from the record, “Stealing Mirrors”, is available for streaming on our BandCamp page and you can pre-order Ghost there as well. If you choose to pre-order the album then you get your download of “Stealing Mirrors” early!New Cathedral
3) How do you feel you’ve grown as musicians in the time between albums?
I think Ghost is a good example of the way our sound has matured since the release of Haunted in 2012. We’ve developed a heavier, darker, sound while also working on the key aspects of our song writing. I think it’s a step in the right direction.

4) Is there a certain track that you’re most proud of on the new record?
This is a difficult question to answer since the answer changes a little bit between each band member. I think we can all rally behind “Emerald Eyes” as one of the favorites, if not the favorite, to play live. On the record, though, our opinions all vary.
Scott- “Stealing Mirrors”
Chris- “Emerald Eyes” and “Stay”
Kersey- “Stay”
Ricky- “Gold” and “I Won’t Come Around pt. II”

5) Any plans to tour this year?
As we mentioned before we are playing a big show with He Is Legend on March 6th, and we’re also releasing our record that day, so that has been our main focus. Once the album is released we will begin the booking process for summer dates around Florida and, from there, who knows? YMN Reviews “Stealing Mirrors”
“Stealing Mirrors” is a great stand alone track and an awesome hint as to how the rest of the album will play out. It clearly shows the growth and maturity that this band has undergone in the last two years. If the rest of the album is anything like “Stealing Mirrors”, then we are in for one incredibly solid album from New Cathedral.

YMN Interview: Savannah Quinn

How did you get your start in music? Was there one thing that really pushed you that way?

I started my music off in choirs. I had the amazing opportunity to travel around the world (Italy, New York) and perform in incredible, famous venues including Carnegie Hall! After a few years of choirs I knew it was time to move on and focus more on performing solo. A few years after being in the choir I started taking vocal lessons from Darcy D. Being with him for two years now, I have discovered what genre I am (Pop Rock) and that I have a huge passion for writing songs as well as performing! I have recently made it into the finals at the PNE Star showdown as well as The Valley Vocal Contest and have been nominated ‘Best Performing Artist’ at the Regional Arty Awards. All of this affirmation keeps me going. I know that music is what I want to be doing with my life and I won’t stop chasing it.

When writing music, where do you draw inspiration from?

While writing music, I draw inspiration from whatever I’m going through or how I’m feeling at that moment. If its a gorgeous sunny day and I’m hanging out on the beach (on of my favorite things to do in the summer) and I’m feeling good, the song that will come out of me is going to be a happy, fun song. If it’s a dreary day and I’m feeling mellow…the song that’s going to come out of me will most likely be a ballad. It’s as simple as that! 🙂

You recently formed a band, care to tell us how that came about?

Yes! I have recently formed a band! It makes me so excited knowing that I have one now! Without the band I would get gigs and it would always be a struggle to find musicians that could find the time to come out and play…it just felt like it was the next step that had to be done. There are five of us in the band Colin (bass), Nick (drums) Rick (lead guitar) Tasha (piano, vocals) Savannah (Lead Vocals and guitar). I have been good friends with Rick and Tasha for a long time and when I told them about the idea of starting a band they were both very excited. I didn’t know of any drummers or bass players so Tasha asked her friend Colin and Rick talked to his friend Nick and well….here we are! It all happened very organically. We all get along very well, it’s just amazing being in a room full of such talented musicians and all of the creative juices flowing! I love it!

What is your favourite thing about performing live?

First of all I’d just like to mention how much I LOVE live performing. The one thing I like most about it though has to be feeding off of the audiences energy. I love looking out in the crowd watching them have a good time and when I see that I love to give that feeling back in return because I’m always having a good time on stage! You know when you go to a concert and you can tell that the artist is really into the emotion of the song…that’s what I try and focus very hard on doing. I believe that if you feel the song and create a moment for your audience, it is that much easier to capture their attention and make that experience that much more memorable.

Who are some of your musical inspirations?

Lately I have been heavily influenced by Grace Potter. She is a Rock singer that has such a wicked voice and so much energy and presence on stage, I really look up to her. If you look up her song ‘The Lion The Beast The beat’, you’ll know what I’m talking about. Throughout my life though, I have been very much influenced by the Beatles and Queen. I grew up on classics like them and I still love and listen to them.

Finally, where do you see yourself, musically, in the next year?

This year, with my new band we are going to be getting as many gigs as possible, working on our performance and honing our original music. Later on in the year we are looking forward to possibly doing a small tour as well as getting some professional recordings done. Mostly though we want to be getting out name out there and performing wherever and whenever we can

Hello everyone!

My name is Matt, some of you might know me from my old blog, YourMusicNews. Don’t worry, we are still carrying on with that, just in some new digs.

Tomorrow, I’ll be up late trying to get everything from our old blog transferred to this one.

All the best and we look forward to having you along on this journey!
