YMN Review: Sally

Sally is a New York City based indie pop trio. Famous for “only writing love songs”, the group is very upbeat musically, which fits very well with their lyrics. On vocals, Kristen Gudsnuk is reminiscent of that of a child’s. Normally, that doesn’t work to well but it seems to work very well for Sally and you could even call it “cute”. All in all, this band has a great sound and everything works quite well together.994614_450196758433185_1065200278_n

Our focus turns to their six sing EP, “We Are In A Car”. I love everything about this record, although I will admit that it did take me a couple of listens to get there. The record kicks off with the title track, which is a very strong track by itself. Musically, it is very well composed and is a joy to listen to. Lyrically, it is quite simple and rather dark, which makes the song that much stronger. As good as the title track is, “A Summer Song” takes things to a new level. Already, you can start to see the ability the band has to vary their sound to keep things fresh, which is crucial to success. Perhaps my favourite track on the album would have to be “Have You Met Someone?”.  It’s stuck right in the middle of the record but really sums up what this band is all about. If you’re planning t402341_270744313045098_597431836_no listen to just one song (which is nearly impossible as this band just keeps you wanting more) let this be the one.

Overall, “We Are In A Car”  is a great addition to anyone’s music collection and I am proud to have it in mine. Sally is a very talented band and I look forward to hearing what they release next!

YMN Review: Stereo Off

Stereo Off is an indie rock band with hints of electro, hailing from New York City. It’s the presence of the electronic twist that really sets these guys apart from the pack. It’s easy to overdo the electronic aspects but Stereo Off gets it just right. The result is a very versatile sound that is both easy to groove to and at the same time, rather mellow.

Formed in 2012, Stereo Off started as a one man show and evolved into the five piece band it is today. Being from New York, the band had no lack of places to play at and they have already played at many of the City’s top venues. Earlier this month, Stereo Off released a self titled, five song EP. The first song “Photographs” is a strong track in itself and really, is just a preview of what’s to come. As you listen to the record, it just seems to get better and better, with each song outdoing the last. Perhaps, my favourite song on the album would be “The Thrill”, a killer song that hooks you immediately and demands that you listen the whole way through. There really isn’t much that I don’t care for in regards to the album and I’m sure the band will just continue to move upwards from here.

In addition, they also have several other songs available on their website, which are also incredibly great and are worth looking into. I look forward to hearing what comes next from this exciting new band.
